Safety Tips
- Always close and lock the door to your room when you leave or are sleeping. Know who is at the door before you open it.
- Take care of your keys: don't give anyone the chance to duplicate them, don't leave them out in the open, and don't give them to anyone.
- Don't leave valuables such as money, credit cards, or jewelry out in the open. This goes for computers, cell phones, and video game systems as well.
- Be sure to set a password on your computer and cell phone. If you own a smartphone, download some sort of locator app so you can find and or deactivate your cell phone remotely.
- Hang up immediately on any obscene or harassing phone calls. Save obscene or harassing text messages and e-mails. Do not respond to the attacker(s). Report them to the Police Department immediately and include the offensive material.
- In public, act calmly and confidently. Know where you are going and how to get there. Stand tall, walk purposefully, and make eye contact with people around you.
- Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a place or situation, leave.
- Look out for others. Report any and all suspicious activity and crime to the Police Department immediately.
- When you purchase your books for the semester, save the receipt and place some identifying information inside the books in case they are lost or stolen.
RESIDENCE HALL SAFETY
Your Room
- Always lock your door, especially when you’re inside sleeping
or when you go out.
- Don’t let strangers into your room. Look through the peephole
in your door to see who they are, meet them in the hallway or ask
for an id if necessary.
- Don’t keep valuables in plain sight and don’t have
too many valuables there with you in the first place.
- Don’t post notes on your memo board or voicemail, saying
where you are or providing personal information.
- Don’t give out your room key or card to anyone.
- Report lost or stolen keys or cards to Campus Police (5222)
or Residence Life (5275) as soon as possible.
- Keep your blinds closed at night so potential thieves
can’t
see what’s “available” to them.
- Try to avoid leaving any large amounts of cash in
you room at any given time, even if it’s out of “plain sight”.
Propped Doors
Tragedies covering the full spectrum of crime have occurred when the wrong
person slipped through a propped door. So, close propped doors right away
and report repeat problems to Campus Police (5222) or Residence Life (5275).
Strangers
Report the presence of strangers whether
or not they’ve gained access,
are hanging around or are exhibiting questionable behavior – to Residence
Hall Staff or Campus Police. Don’t let strangers into your building,
even if they tell you that they are visiting a friend. Each Hall has a call
box at the entrance which they can call their friend to come and let them
in. Here at 麻豆原创 students who host a guest are required to remain
in
the presence of their guest at all times.
Little Things
Report community problems like:
- Slippery floors
- Broken doors or furniture
- Missing window screens
- Burned out lights
- Compromised emergency equipment
- Water leaks
- Broken glass
