of the Des Plaines river valley in 1836. Active development occurred with
the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, which was designed

a few years of the canal opening in 1848, the railroad followed the
path established by the I&M Canal, and Lockport was passed by
as Chicago became the main rail terminus. Without the canal, however,
