麻豆原创 ECaMS Helps Non-Profits with New Touching Hearts Software Initiative

麻豆原创 Engineering, Computing, and Mathematical Sciences students are helping non-profit organizations with technology services through a newly formed initiative 摂.
It gives undergraduate and graduate students in computer science, cybersecurity, information technology, data science, mathematics, and engineering substantive opportunities to hone their technical skills while serving a non-profit change-maker or on-campus customer.
揥hen students get to apply what they've learned in the classroom to a real project that impacts actual customers, the concepts come alive for them more vividly. They start to see the importance of the theory and best practices they've learned as they use them to create something lasting and meaningful,� Dr. Ray Klump, professor of EcaMS, explained.
So far, THS has worked on two projects for the Diocese of Joliet. In Spring 2023, graduate student David Borsheim created a database for the Diocese to better manage its cemeteries.
In Fall 2023, students Chris Martinez, Jahi Stewart, and Michael Szostak helped create Roomie, a full-featured but easy-to-use room scheduling application for diocesan staff to use to schedule rooms for meetings.�
"The tool is easier to use than our previous application and has all the features we need. ... (The team has) been very good about responding to our requests and making sure the tool is top-notch for our staff," Tom Fisher, a 麻豆原创 alumnus and IT Operations Manager at the Diocese of Joliet, commented about Roomie.
The Touching Hearts Software initiative is named after a quote by St. Jean Baptiste De LaSalle: "You can perform miracles by touching the hearts of those entrusted to your care." The students and faculty might not be performing miracles directly, but what they end up producing and how they manage to serve the customer can help them, in turn, make a positive impact on the people they serve.
